Preservatives-the good and the bad!

Have you ever wondered how long a dessert has been sitting on the shelf at your local supermarket, or why some bakeries can leave pies and cakes unrefrigerated for days? The answer-preservatives.

The definition of a preservative, according to Wikipedia, is a natural or synthetic chemical that is added to products such as foods, pharmaceuticals, paint, wood etc. to prevent decomposition by microbial growth or by undesirable chemical changes. In laymans terms, and relating to food, it is something that is added to our food to create a longer shelf life.

At A Grande Finale we have chosen to never add preservatives to our desserts, therefore resulting in a better quality, more natural product. Our products are meant to be enjoyed within several days, or you could use a natural form of preservation and freeze them to be enjoyed at a later time.

It is important to be aware of what is in your food, as some modern synthetic preservatives have been shown to cause respiratory or other heath problems. When reading labels, common preservatives that are added to food include: calcium, propionate, sodium nitrate, sodium nitrite, sulfites, disodium EDTA, formaldehyde and ethanol. While some preservatives are very necessary, like the preservatives found in bacon, ham and deli meats, other, processed foods only contain preservatives so that products can be kept on the shelves for long periods of time.
